Bishop Douglas Deshotel celebrated a special Mass for the 100th Anniversary of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas. The centennial Mass was held on Sunday, October 18, 2020. Father Augustine Wall, SVD was the guest Homilist. Holy Ghost Catholic Church was established in October 1920. Then Bishop Jules Jenmard of the Diocese of Lafayette was instrumental in working with St. Landry Catholic Church pastor Canon A.B. Colliard in establishing a separate church in Opelousas for African Americans. Holy Ghost Catholic Church, percentage-wise, has the largest percentage of African American Catholics in the nation.
